L-1 wins $18M license tech contract from New Jersey

By Rodney H. Brown

The State of New Jersey has awarded Connecticut firm L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. a seven-year contract worth $18 million to provide a system for secure driver’s licenses.

According to officials at L-1 (NYSE: ID), the first year of the contract will see the company preparing for and implementing the new system. Over the remaining six years, Stamford-based L-1 will produce cards and provide equipment and software maintenance.

Last October, L-1 landed a contract worth a potential $195 million from the U.S. Department of State to provide production systems for passports. The company’s Trans Digital Technologies Corp. subsidiary is providing high-security production systems to make U.S. passports for the 22 agencies under the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Systems and Technology Directorate.

Also that month, L-1 brought in $6.2 million for mobile biometric recognition devices from an unidentified customer. Under the contract, L-1’s biometrics division will provide its Hand-held Interagency Identity Detection Equipment (HIIDE) to an unnamed client who plans to use the devices in areas of conflict.

After running in the red for the first two quarters of 2009, L-1 posted a profit for the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2009 of $1.37 million on revenue of $172.5 million.
