The Bay State will get greater cell phone coverage from AT&T Inc., which announced plans for 2010 that will see it add more than 15 new cell sites and upgrades of more than 60 additional cell sites to 3G.
While officials at AT&T (NYSE: T) did not announce how much money would be spent on the enhancements locally, they did point out that the company plans to spend between $18 billion and $19 billion nationally, which is between a 5 percent and 10 percent increase over last year.
Throughout 2009 AT&T added 16 new cell sites and upgraded 143 existing sites to 3G in Massachusetts, according to officials. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T spent nearly $425 million on its Massachusetts wireless and wireline networks.
In addition to the new towers and 3G upgrades in Massachusetts, AT&T also said it will boost capacity on dozens of sites throughout the state. And back at a national level, AT&T plans to put $2 billion in capital expenditures for wireless and backhaul related to its wireless network.
Those backhaul upgrades are needed to move toward next-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband technology. AT&T said it plans to begin trials of LTE technology this year, and to begin LTE deployment in 2011.
