GT Solar lands $20M furnace contract

By Jackie Noblett

GT Solar International Inc. announced late Wednesday that it has received a $20 million contract from a Chinese solar photovoltaic manufacturer for its furnaces used to make multi-crystalline silicon wafers.

The contract with Jiangxi Sornid Hi-Tech Co. Ltd. covers both the furnaces, which grow ingots of silicon used to make wafers for solar panels, as well as ancillary equipment and services. About 1,300 GT Solar furnaces are in use today.

In a statement, GT Solar CEO Tom Gutierrez said the company has seen an increased demand for its furnaces as solar production has rebounded. The company is expanding its service and support team in China as a result.
