British firm Linguamatics opens in Newton

Linguamatics Ltd., a U.K.-based search and text mining software firm that caters especially to the life sciences industry, has opened a North American regional headquarters in Newton, the company announced today.

The company said it has added new pharmaceutical customers in 2009, prompting the hiring of more people in software development and business operations. The new regional headquarters will be located at 275 Grove St. in Newton.

Founded in 2001 and located in Cambridge, U.K., Linguamatics states on its website that most of the top 10 pharmaceutical firms use its I2E information extraction system. The system is designed to help users mine large amounts of data, documents, patents, internal reports and news feeds.

In accordance with the company’s growth, David Keilman has also been appointed as director of channels and alliances, where he will be responsible for developing strategic partnerships.
