PatientsLikeMe acquires ReliefInsite.com

By Mass High Tech staff

PatientsLikeMe Inc. reports it has acquired pain management web site operator ReliefInsite.com LLC, according to a PatientsLikeMe blog entry.

New York-based ReliefInsite.com is an online community where people suffering from pain can assess and track their pain levels. The site, which allows users to share the information with their doctors, was designed to be compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The company was founded in 2000.

As part of the acquisition deal, ReliefInsite founder Fred Eberlein will join PatientsLikeMe. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cambridge-based PatientsLikeMe runs an online community for people with various life-changing diseases.

The company was founded in 2004 by brothers Jamie and Benjamin Heywood and friend Jeff Cole. The diagnosis of Jamie and Benjamin's brother, Stephen, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, prompted the founding of the company and launched its first online community, for people with Lou Gehrig’s disease, in March 2006. It followed with communities focused on multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease in April 2007, for HIV/AIDs in November 2007 and for mood disorders such as depression and anxiety in 2008.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article misidentified the co-founders of PatientsLikeMe. The company was founded by Jamie and Benjamin Heywood and friend Jeff Cole. The Heywood's brother Stephen, who was diagnosed with ALS, prompted the formation of the company in 2004.
