Nuance Communications Inc. announced Tuesday that it has acquired MacSpeech Inc., a provider of speech-to-text software for Apple Inc.’s Macintosh computers.
The Burlington voice recognition software firm develops and sells speech-to-text software products, including the Dragon NaturallySpeaking product line for PCs, but the acquisition will allow the company to extend its reach into Macs as a native application.
MacSpeech, a Salem, N.H., company, licensed Nuance’s technology to develop its Dictate product, and Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN) had begun work with dictation technology for Apple products including the iPhone.
“We have heard from our customers — and from the Mac community at large — for years that they want Dragon for the Mac environment,” said Peter Mahoney, senior vice president and general manager for Dragon at Nuance Communications, in a statement.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
