MS experts join Biogen Idec R&D team
By Mass High Tech staff
Cambridge biotechnology firm Biogen Idec Inc. has added multiple sclerosis experts John Richert and Nancy Richert to its research and development team.
John Richert will serve as senior fellow in neurology research and development at Biogen Idec, where he will be responsible for leading the company’s MS strategy and improving personalized medicine access. He previously held the executive vice president role for research and clinical programs at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Before the five years he spent with NMSS, John Richert worked at Georgetown University as a professor and chair of the department of microbiology and immunology, professor of neurology and founder of Georgetown’s MS clinic.
Nancy Richert joins Biogen Idec as a fellow in neurology research and development, where she will be responsible for advising on MRI use and clinical trial imaging technology, developing imaging strategies and building neuroimaging contacts for MS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. She previously worked as a staff clinician at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, as well as a consulting staff in the diagnostic imaging and radiology department at the Children’s National Medical Center.
News of the appointments comes at the same time that Biogen Idec reported its profits have increased 24 percent for 2009, due in part to increased revenue for Tysabri, the company’s MS drug it co-owns with Elan Pharmaceuticals. The two companies announced in January that Tysabri had hit $1 billion in annual sales.
