WPI lands funding for new eco-materials research center

By Brendan Lynch

Worcester Polytechnic Institute reports it has landed $400,000 from the National Science Foundation to establish a research center focused on recycling building and manufacturing materials in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines.

The five-year grant will establish the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling. The center, located at both institutions, is intended to research ways to reduce the energy usage and the carbon footprint associated with construction and manufacturing. The center plans to use the funding to recruit 30 to 40 corporations as members, who would pay $30,000 per year. Members will be able to influence the direction of the center’s research and benefit from its research, according to the WPI.

WPI professor of mechanical engineering Diran Apelian will serve as director of the center.

The center plans to collaborate with industry partners to conduct research on recycling and recovery technology — including sensors, controls, and sorting technologies — that could maximize the reuse of post-consumer scrap and minimize the production of manufacturing scrap. WPI’s research will be conducted on metals used in structural applications, such as steel used in buildings and aluminum forged for automotive components, while the Colorado School of Mines will focus on metals used in functional applications, including high-value and rare-earth metals used in computers, electronics and photovoltaics.
