Genzyme appoints Canute to oversee manufacturing

By Mass High Tech staff

Genzyme Corp. has named former Eli Lilly & Company executive Scott Canute as president of global manufacturing and corporate operations, where he will oversee 17 global production sites.

The company and its manufacturing operations have been in the news because of the temporary shutdown of its Allston manufacturing plant last year. In addition to today’s announcement of Canute’s appointment, Genzyme announced last month that it had named Ron Branning as vice president of global product quality, in charge of the quality stemming from the company’s 17 manufacturing sites worldwide.

While at Eli Lilly, Canute served as president of global manufacturing operations, a role in which he directed supply chain operations at the company’s 24 manufacturing sites worldwide, which employed about 14,000 workers.

Canute graduated with a master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School and an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan.

Genzyme’s temporary shutdown of the Allston plant has led to an ongoing shortage of drugs for two rare, serious diseases, Fabry disease and Gaucher disease. Last month, Genzyme announced it would contract with an outside company to provide some manufacturing services that had previously been done at the Allston plant.
