Sikorsky launches new vertical flight unit

By Brendan Lynch

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. has launched an R&D unit called Sikorsky Innovations, the company reports.

The Stratford, Conn.-based subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) said Sikorsky Innovations is created to develop technology related to vertical flight. The group plans to collaborate with government technology agencies, academic institutions, other UTC units and companies such as Hampton, Va.-based Eagle Aviation Technologies LLC, in which Sikorsky recently invested. Projects under the Sikorsky Innovations umbrella are already underway at about 20 U.S. locations, the company said.

Sikorsky called Sikorsky Innovations a “virtual organization” but said it will be based at Sikorsky’s Stratford headquarters.

Sikorsky announced the new division at the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, Conn.
