Thermo Fisher acquires Finnzymes
By Mass High Tech staff
Waltham instrumentation firm Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. has signed a deal to buy Finnzymes, a 24-year-old molecular biology analytical tool developer based in Finland.
Thermo Fisher’s acquisition brings Finnzyme’s DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology intended to improve enzyme performance. The PCR process can aid genetic testing, genomic research, forensics and food testing, according to a news release from Thermo Fisher. More specifically, Finnzyme adds its Phire and Phusion DNA polymerases and high-speed miniaturized thermal cyclers to Thermo Fisher.
No financial terms of the acquisition were disclosed. Finnzymes will become part of Thermo Fisher’s Analytical Technologies Segment, with some products and equipment integrating into the Laboratory Products and Services Segment.
The two companies did not disclose whether Finnzymes’ 90 employees would continue working in their capacity under Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Thermo Fisher (NYSE: TMO) employs about 35,000 workers and has more than 350,000 customers in pharmaceutical and biotech companies, hospitals and clinical diagnostic labs, universities, research institutions and government agencies, as well as environmental and industrial process control settings.
