Harvard spins out now-independent StopBadware

By Brendan Lynch

Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society reports it has spun out its StopBadware group as an independent nonprofit funded by Google Inc., PayPal Inc. and the Mozilla Foundation.

The Berkman Center started the group four years ago as an effort to fight viruses, spyware and other types of software that use a person’s computer or network in ways that disregard that person’s choices. The group will be known as StopBadware Inc., and it plans to continue sharing information about malware through a community of web users, the Berkman Center said.

StopBadware follows other Berkman Center nonprofit spinouts including Creative Commons and Global Voices Online.

StopBadware was founded by Harvard professors Jonathan Zittrain and John Palfrey. Maxim Weinstein will serve as executive director of the independent StopBadware, while Palfrey will sit on the board of the nonprofit. Michael Barrett of Google, Vint Cerf of Google, Mike Shaver of Mozilla and Ari Schwartz of the nonprofit Center for Democracy and Technology will also sit on the board.
