ALS gene therapy collaboration moves to next level

The ALS Therapy Development Institute and Oxford BioMedica (LSE: OXB) today said that they are advancing to a second phase their collaboration on a preclinical gene therapy candidate for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

The collaboration, which is funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association, is an effort to advance the development of Oxford BioMedica’s preclinical gene therapy candidate and to evaluate other gene-based strategies for the treatment of ALS.

The collaboration combines Oxford BioMedica’s advanced LentiVector gene delivery technology with Cambridge-based ALS TDI’s gene expression database and drug screening capabilities. The first phase of the collaboration included the development of techniques to evaluate gene therapy candidates. TDI’s research facility is based in Cambridge.

In the second phase, the ALS TDI will conduct preclinical efficacy studies of Oxford’s LentiVector-based product, MoNuDin, which is designed to protect motor neurons susceptible to degeneration from ALS by targeted delivery of the neuroprotective gene, vascular endothelial growth factor.
