Solaya Energy has been tapped to build a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine at the Massachusetts Water Resources Facility’s pump station in Charlestown.
The Woburn renewable energy developer and construction company will erect a 364-foot turbine that generates enough electricity to power 300 homes. About 20 percent of the power will be used on site, which pumps wastewater from Charlestown, Medford, Somerville and Cambridge to the Deer Island treatment facility in Boston, and the rest will be net metered into the electrical grid. The agency expects to save an average of $350,000 a year over the life of the turbine.
The $4.7 million project is financed through stimulus funds, and work is expected to begin in March.
Solaya is also building a turbine for the MWRA treatment facility at Deer Island.
Earlier this month, the company announced that it will build a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine on state Department of Transportation land in western Massachusetts, alongside the Massachusetts Turnpike.
