MBTA expands bus tracking feeds
By Mass High Tech staff
State officials today announced an expansion of its efforts to help customers track MBTA buses and see real-time location and arrival predictions, while encouraging further independent development of applications using MBTA data.
Today’s announcement is a follow-on to an initiative during the fall when the Massachusetts Department of Transportation held a developers conference and challenge that led to mobile phone and web applications such as one that showed bus locations through Google Earth.
The latest real-time bus tracking tool provides information about the same five bus routes as part of a pilot program on www.mbta.com, adding the ability to predict arrival times at various locations. The five routes— routes 39, 111, 114, 116 and 117 — serve areas including Jamaica Plain, Longwood Medical Area, Back Bay, Haymarket, East Boston, Chelsea and Revere.
MassDOT said it plans to participate in a Hackathon at MIT’s Center for Future Civic Media on Friday and Saturday, with MassDOT and the MBTA partnering with MIT students and others to build applications, websites and physical signs that help riders access the MBTA system.
