AMSC lands wind turbine components order in China
By Mass High Tech staff
American Superconductor Corp. has received an order from power equipment manufacturer XJ Group Corp. of China for 100 sets of wind turbine electrical components to be used in 2-megawatt doubly-fed induction wind turbines co-developed with AMSC subsidiary AMSC Windtec.
The electrical components are made to control power flows, regulate voltage, control wind turbine blade pitch and monitor system operations. The components consist of AMSC’s PowerModule power converters, SCADA systems, pitch and yaw converters and power electronics.
Owned by State Grid Corp., XJ Group has also finished building a wind turbine manufacturing plant, with a 1,000-megawatt annual capacity, in Xuchang, China.
XJ Group and AMSC Windtec have collaborated in making 2-megawatt turbines adaptable to such environmental conditions in parts of China with low air density and low average wind speed.
Devens-based AMSC (Nasdaq: AMSC) announced earlier this month that it had signed a contract with Dongfang Turbine Co. Ltd. to design and co-develop 5-megawatt offshore wind turbines.
