Chuck Digate, serial entrepreneur and member of the first class of New England Clean Energy Council clean energy fellows, has taken the wraps off his newest startup, an offshore wind company called Neptune Wind.
Digate, who founded Convoq Inc. and Beyond Inc., and was CEO of MathSoft Inc., today told Mass High Tech that his new company is still in the “very early stages.” He said he is working to get site control from state and federal agencies of at least one of several locations off the coasts of Massachusetts and Maine.
“My hope is to get control of a site by the end of the year and then start to raise some money,” said Digate, who is the sole employee at this point, working out of his Winchester home. However, he has partnered with international engineering and management consulting firm Arcadis and has signed on Boston law firm Foley Hoag LLP.
Digate said he has identified a technology provider for his wind projects but isn’t ready to release the name. However, he did say that his sites are in relatively shallow water of less than 50 meters. “The question now is getting site control. We’re working on all of them in parallel,” he said.
On the Neptune Wind website, Digate noted, “Our goal is to develop a pipeline of projects that range from 200 megawatts to 500 megawatts of rated capacity with a total portfolio target of over 1,000 megawats.”
He said he is releasing details of his plans now that the Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan and report of the Ocean Energy Task Force in Maine have clarified the states’ plans for offshore wind generation.
Digate noted that he believes the controversial Cape Wind project off Cape Cod will receive either final approval from U.S. Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar by April or a compromise by March.
Digate was named a Mass High Tech All-Star in 2005.
