Protonex fuel cell deal to net up to $6.4M

By Mass High Tech staff

Marlborough-based fuel cell firm Protonex Technology Corp. has landed a contract from the U.S. Army CECOM worth $1.85 million for the development and supply of advanced portable battery charger/auxiliary power units (APU) fuel cell systems. The contract, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, could increase to $6.4 million if three option phases are awarded.

The fuel cell systems, to be developed from the current M250-CX 240-watt platform, would give the military portable field battery chargers or APUs that are quiet, light weight and fuel efficient.

The contract is expected to save on costs associated with non-rechargeable batteries used in the field, according to a news release from Protonex (LON: PTX) officials.

In December, the company won a contract worth a potential $1 million to develop fuel cells for the Army. Protonex University of South Carolina Research Foundation and WinTec Arrowmaker Inc., a Fort Washington, Md.-based defense engineering firm.
