Covidien files IP suit against J&J subsidiary

By Mass High Tech staff

Covidien plc, an Irish medical device firm with U.S. headquarters in Mansfield, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson Co. subsidiary Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc., a developer of ultrasonic surgical products.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of Connecticut, following a prior dismissal of an earlier identical lawsuit on unspecified grounds.

The lawsuit alleges that Ethicon’s Harmonic ultrasound devices infringe on three of Covidien’s patents for its ultrasonic dissection system and coagulation system and its ultrasonic curved blade.

Covidien (NYSE: COV) is requesting that the court halt the production and sales of the Harmonic devices, and Ethicon return an unspecified amount in damages to the company.
