New Haven printing company Phoenix Press announced Thursday their plans to break ground next week on a turbine project at its headquarters, which will become the largest wind turbine in the state.
The project located on the banks of the Quinnipiac River will include a 100-kilowatt Northwind turbine designed and produced by Barre, Vt.-based Northern Power Systems. The turbine is estimated to provide one-third of the company’s energy needs.
“The dream my brother Kevin and I had is finally becoming a reality, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Phoenix Press president and co-owner Brian Driscoll in a statement.
Phoenix Press’s turbine received a $263,000 grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, which funds clean energy projects with ratepayer dollars.
“It is an exciting project not only because it will point Connecticut in a whole new direction in renewables but also because it will go a long way toward raising awareness about clean energy alternatives, given the turbine’s highly visible location,” said Lise Dondy, president of the clean energy fund, in a statement. “Drivers traveling over New Haven’s Quinnipiac Bridge on I-95 will have a clear view of the wind turbine on the banks of the river.”
