Conn. broadband lands $1.8M in stimulus funds
By Mass High Tech staff
Connecticut has pulled in $1.8 million in federal stimulus funding to apply to broadband mapping and data collection, according to an announcement by Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
The funds have been divided, with $1.3 million being applied to the creation of an interactive map of Connecticut displaying broadband availability and $500,000 for a state broadband plan.
Leading the planning of the broadband mapping is the Department of Public Utility Control, with support from the Connecticut Geospatial Council and the Departments of Information Technology, Public Safety, Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Transportation.
Connecticut received the funds after applying through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act calls for $7.2 billion to be used for improving the nation’s broadband access, particularly in rural areas. Two groups will be responsible for expanding Internet access; the U.S. Department of Agriculture will dole out $2.5 billion and the U.S. Department of Commerce will handle $4.7 billion.
