20 Mass. wind projects claim $2.5M in grants

By Mass High Tech staff

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center is awarding $2.5 million in grants to 20 wind energy projects. The grants are part of the Commonwealth Wind Community-Scale Wind Initiative, a Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust program, that helps wind projects of at least 100 kilowatts.

The fundings, which will support Gov. Deval Patrick’s 2020 goal of developing 2,000 megawatts of wind power capacity, are being directed to communities, educational institutions, public and private institutions and the MBTA.

Of the grant projects, six will use the funds for design and construction of projects with more than 12 megawatts and 14 projects will direct the grants to feasibility studies for projects that would have more than 13 megawatts in capacity.

The grant recipients include the following projects:

Design and construction grants:
Bay Path Regional Technical High School (Charlton) — $399,000 award for a 900-kilowatt (kW) turbine on campus
Camelot Wind LLC (Plymouth) — $240,000 award for a 1.65-megawatt wind turbine
