New England firms win share of $2.3B in cleantech tax credits

A dozen New England companies were among the firms selected to receive a total of $2.3 billion in tax credits for 183 project announced by the Obama administration recently.
The Recovery Act Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits, authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, are intended to create at least 17,000 clean energy manufacturing jobs in areas such as solar and wind power, and energy management and efficiency.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, projects selected for the tax credit generally must be placed in service by 2014, although approximately 30 percent of them will be completed in 2010.
Among the New England companies listed in the awards:
Acuity Brands Inc., Wallingford, Conn., $225,000 for lighting sensors
Airxchange Inc., Rockland, $920,870 to recover energy expelled by heating and air conditioning systems
CertainTeed Corp., Norwood, $1,012,500 for residential cool shingles
General Electric Co., Rutland, Vt., $11,860,058 for machinery to build more efficient aircraft engines
GreenRay Inc., Westford, $180,000 for AC solar electrical systems
Premium Power, North Reading, $3,000,000 for renewable energy storage systems for use in the smart grid
RE-Gen LLC, Millinocket, Maine, $903,480 for biomass gasification furnaces
Roller Bearing Co. of America Inc., Oxford, Conn., $4,157,400 for turbine blade and yaw bearings, and $4,155,000 for its Houston facility
Spire Semiconductor LLC, Hudson, N.H., $2,044,500 for a concentrator photovoltaic cell and receiver assembly
STR Inc., Somers, Conn., $829,020 for extruded sheets and film for solar modules
United Technologies Corp., Middletown, Conn., $110,400,000 for energy efficient aircraft engines
UTC Power Corp., South Windsor, Conn., $5,300,100 for a fuel cell manufacturing facility
