Mobile software startup Scvngr Inc., whose platform allows for the creation of location-based scavenger hunts, games and tours, plans to use part of its recent $4 million funding round to expand overseas — first into Europe and then into Asia.
In Asia, the Boston-based startup will target Japan and Korea and eventually China. Along with the latest news, Scvngr says Joe Kraus, the founder of California-based JotSpot (which Google acquired in 2006) will join as a board observer. JotSpot was a developer of wiki technology, which allows users to share and edit documents on the web. The operation was relaunched in 2008 as Google Sites.
The recent investment round, which was reported in late December, saw the addition of Google Ventures to Scvngr’s list of backers, which included Highland Capital Partners. At that time, Scvngr CEO Seth Priebatsch confirmed that Rich Miner, of Google Ventures, had joined Scvngr’s board of directors. Scvngr had taken on a previous investment round of $825,000 from Highland Capital in December 2008.
In early December, Priebatsch said the company planned to double in size, from 20 to 40 employees, in the next two months, so he held an open house to bring in potential new staffers. At the time, Priebatsch said he anticipated the company would make $1 million in revenue in its first full year of operation in 2009.
