Athenahealth wins Caritas Christi e-health deal

By Julie M. Donnelly

Athenahealth Inc., a provider of Internet-based business services to physician practices, has announced that Caritas Christi Health Care has signed on to adopt the company’s electronic health record service.

Boston-based Caritas Christi will now use Watertown-based athenahealth’s system for 500 medical providers who are part of its owned doctors’ practices. Caritas will also offer the service to 1,200 affiliated providers. Caritas is currently using athenahealth’s revenue cycle management service. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“The growing demands on our medical providers and staff to stay current with changing reimbursement protocols, increased consumer responsibility and performance-based clinical reporting have required our health system to harness more flexible, network-based services like athenahealth’s,” said Caritas Christi CEO and president Ralph de la Torre, in a statement.

Caritas officials said use of the athenahealth products will help the health-care network to comply with the federal requirements of last year’s HITECH act, which provides incentives for hospitals and doctors to adopt electronic medical records. This includes up to $44,000 total in Medicare payment incentives per eligible provider who demonstrates “meaningful use” of an electronic health record starting in 2011. Guidelines for “meaningful use” were finalized last month.

Caritas Christi has over 13,000 employees. Hospitals in the system include Saint Anne’s in Fall River, Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton, Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Carney Hospital in Dorchester, and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton.
