American Superconductor Corp. announced Tuesday it will design and co-develop 5 megawatt offshore wind turbines with a Chinese manufacturer.
The Devens-based wind design and alternative energy components maker (Nasdaq: AMSC) signed a contract with Dongfang Turbine Co. Ltd. to produce the turbines in China. The agreement gives Dongfang exclusive rights to AMSC’s 5 megawatt turbine design and requires the manufacturer to give AMSC the opportunity to provide the core electrical components for the system.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The two companies previously agreed to develop AMSC’s 2.5-megawatt turbine design, and those systems are expected to go into production in the second half of this year.
“Dongfang already has established itself as one of China’s largest wind turbine manufacturers and is poised for strong growth in 2010 and beyond as it introduces its new 2.5 megawatts in the second half of this year and its 5 megawatt wind turbines in the next two years,” said Greg Yurek, founder and CEO of AMSC, in a statement. “We are particularly pleased to see more and more of our customers become repeat customers for new wind turbine designs. It is a validation of our advanced wind turbine technologies and signals more growth for our customers and AMSC going forward.”
