By Mass High Tech staff
IT market research firm Gartner Inc. said it has acquired competitor Burton Group, based in Midvale, Utah, for $56 million in cash. Gartner said the deal was finalized on December 30.
Gartner, based in Stamford, Conn., said the acquisition will expand its service offerings and provide new opportunities in the enterprise IT market. Burton, which originally focused on consulting and market research in the networking sector, has expanded its service offerings over the years to cover most areas of enterprise IT hardware and software. Burton reported having 41 research analysts and 40 sales and client services staff, and it was estimated to have $30 million in 2009 revenue.
Gartner (NYSE: IT) said it expects the purchase to be dilutive in the short term and accretive over time.
The Burton acquisition represents Gartner’s second major deal in a month in the consolidating market research sector. On December 1, Gartner announced the acquisition of Boston-based AMR Research for $64 million in cash. AMR had specialized in consulting and market research in the supply chain management, customer relationship management and enterprise resource management software sector.
