Pixtronix pulls in $19M in new funding

By Galen Moore

Pixtronix Inc. has picked up $19 million in a new round of equity and warrants, and may have brought in a major cell phone maker as a new strategic investor, according to a regulatory filing posted yesterday.

In documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Andover-based mobile display technology maker disclosed the names of four board members.  Two, Jeffrey Andrews and Russell Siegelman, represent returning investors Atlas Venture and Kleiner Perkins Caulfield Beyers, respectively. A third, Gerald Fine, is a Boston University professor who holds an advisory position on the board.

The fourth board member is Bill Byun, a new addition to Pixtronix’ board. The documents do not identify Byun beyond his name – but Bill Byun is also the name of a California-based managing director at Samsung Venture Capital, the venture investing arm of Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.

Byun and other representatives at Samsung VC’s San Jose office did not return calls seeking comment. Pixtronix executives also did not return calls seeking comment.

The investment brings Pixtronix’ total venture financing to at least $52.7 million, including a small debt round closed in the summer. Besides Atlas and Kleiner, its investors include Duff Ackerman & Goodrich Ventures, and Gold Hill Capital.

Pixtronix was founded in 2005 by CTO Nesbitt Hagood, and is developing improved electronic displays designed to consume less power. The company unveiled its first product, PerfectLight, in November of 2008.
