Lab space: Subpar in suburbia

Suburban lab space saw the greatest growth in vacancy rates in the six months ending Sept. 30 (13.1% vacancy) versus the previous six month period (8.7%), driving total vacancy up from 9.7% to 10.4%.

Key moves in recent months include:

48,000  The square footage in Watertown vacated by Acusphere after a consolidation
47,000   The space that Eisai offered as sublease in Lexington after acquiring MGI Pharma
72,000   The space Sepracor vacated in Marlborough after a consolidation
500,000   The new space Shire HGT plans to occupy in Lexington
218,000   The space Vertex (145,000 sq ft) and Forsyth Institute (73,000) are taking on in Cambridge
