The announcement came as Vice President Joe Biden announced $2 billion in grants to improve broadband access nationwide.

Patrick cited Dumont’s more than 20 years of management experience, including more than 17 years in the wireless telecommunications industry.

She spent 15 years with Lightbridge, a Bay State software company, holding roles ranging from client support to account management and from product management to business and strategic planning, ending up as president of the company’s decisioning solutions business. Most recently she worked with placement firm Sally Silver Companies.

Pam Reeve, former CEO of Lightbridge, founding CEO of Boston’s openairboston.net, and chair of The Commonwealth Institute, said of Dumont in a press release from the governor, “She is among the most talented managers and problem solvers with whom I have worked. Judy has successfully managed complex projects with very time-sensitive deliverables.”

In the same press release, Don Dubendorf, chair of WesternMA Connect, Inc. said, “Judy is the perfect choice to lead the MBI at this critical juncture. We have a good plan in place, and the job now is operational and getting this done.”

The MBI is using a $2 million federal stimulus award for the collection and mapping of broadband availability and infrastructure information. Federal funding awards for broadband infrastructure deployment are expected to be announced on a rolling basis beginning today through February 2010.

Also announced today, the city of Boston and two companies in Maine and New Hampshire have won more than $28 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand broadband Internet access, as Vice President Joe Biden announced $182 million in funding for broadband projects in 17 states.
