In-screen speaker firm Emo Labs lands $1.5M

By Galen Moore

Emo Labs Inc. , the in-screen speaker company developing sound equipment for flat-screen televisions, has secured $1.5 million in follow-on financing, according to a regulatory filing posted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday. The funds, a tranche of a $2.7 million round, come from one of the company’s existing investors, said CEO Jason Carlson.

Emo Labs spun off in 2005 from Natick-based Manifold Products LLC, along with mobile and laptop accessory maker Newton Peripherals LLC.  Manifold has since spun off smart grid device developer OutSmart Power Systems LLC.

Emo Labs
is developing a technology that effectively turns a television’s entire screen into a speaker by overlaying the screen with a transparent, sound-producing membrane. The screen-speaker is designed to provide better sound fidelity than other low-profile, built-in speakers.

The tranche of funding brings Emo’s total investment to $16.5 million, Carlson said. The company currently has prototypes of its product “at various stages of evaluation” with multiple original equipment manufacturers and original design manufacturers, he said. Its new funds will go toward continued development of the product.

Waltham-based Emo Labs has 15 employees, Carlson said.
