GamerDNA bought by NY firm Crispy Gamer

By Rodney H. Brown

Less than two months after announcing it had to cut its staff size in half, GamerDNA Inc. of Cambridge has found a buyer in partner website business Crispy Gamer Inc. While no details of the deal have been made available, officials at Crispy Gamer have confirmed the purchase.

According to his blog, GamerDNA CEO and founder Jon Radoff will help in the transition of GamerDNA to Crispy Gamer ownership, but will not have an ongoing role with the company, which was confirmed by Crispy Gamer chief marketing officer Anne Mischler.

GamerDNA will continue to exist as a separate entity, and some of the employees will come over to the new ownership, Mischler said, but could not state how many. Chris Heldman is president and CEO of New York-based Crispy Gamer, which has 15 full-time employees prior to the GamerDNA acquisition.

In February, Crispy Gamer and GamerDNA entered into a partnership in which GamerDNA placed Crispy Gamer reviews and trailers within its Discovery Engine on gamerDNA.com. Mischler said the two companies were still working on whether or not GamerDNA would still have a presence in Cambridge after the sale or be moved to New York.

GamerDNA runs an online social network for video game players, which recommends games based on players’ stated preferences and game-playing activity and then tracks that information and shares it through social networks like Twitter. The company was founded by Jon Radoff in 2006 as Sparkforge Entertainment Inc.

When it took its first round of funding — $3 million in Series A venture capital financing from Boston-based Flybridge Capital Partners — the company, which had already changed its name to GuildCafe Entertainment Inc., changed again to GamerDNA. Flybridge’s Jon Karlen holds a seat on GamerDNA’s board.

GamerDNA bases its revenue model on advertising on gamerDNA.com. In July, the company announced the launch of an online ad-serving network, the GamerDNA Alliance Network, which targets ads based on games users are playing and discussing online.

Crispy Gamer was founded in February of 2008 and has taken in one round of venture funding, an $8 million round from Constellation Growth Capital. The company is a game-focused media site, featuring reviews, editorial content and original videos, according to Mischler.
