Vertex appoints Wysenksi its new commercial head

By Julie M. Donnelly

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. has appointed Nancy J. Wysenski as executive vice president and chief commercial officer. Wysenski will serve as a member of Vertex’s executive team, reporting directly to the company’s chairman, president and CEO Matthew Emmens. She replaces Kurt Graves, who left in October.

The company made the appointment in advance of what it hopes will be its first drug approval next year. Vertex co-discovered the successful HIV drug, Lexiva, with GlaxoSmithKline, but does not currently market any drugs on its own.

The company expects to submit its Hepatitis C drug, telaprevir, for FDA approval in the second half of next year.

“As we evolve into a fully-capable pharmaceutical company, Nancy will provide key operational and commercial expertise to support the continued advancement of our future sales and marketing strategies,” said Emmens, in a statement.

Company officials said Wysenski will have broad responsibility for sales, marketing, market research and sales operations activities as the company creates and executes commercial plans to support the potential launch of its late-stage product opportunities.

Prior to joining Vertex, Wysenski held the position of COO at Endo Pharmaceuticals. Prior to her role at Endo, she was a co-founder of EMD Pharmaceuticals Inc., the North American subsidiary of Merck KGaA, where she held various leadership positions, including the role of president and CEO from 2001 to 2006. Wysenski holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kent State University and an MBA from Baldwin Wallace College.
