
Waltham-based Novell Inc. saw its network software business drop in its fiscal 2009, while its open source-based product line continued to make up a larger part of the company’s revenue, according to its recently filed annual report.
For the full fiscal year 2009, which ended Oct. 31, Novell showed net revenue of $862 million versus a net revenue in 2008 of $957 million. The company reported a GAAP net loss of $213 million, against a 2008 net loss of $9 million. Novell officials pointed out that 2009 saw a $279 million non-cash impairment charge to goodwill and intangible assets.
One bright spot for Novell in 2009 came from its Open Platform Solutions product line, which reported $157 million in revenue, of which $149 million was from Linux Platform Products, a jump of 21 percent compared to Linux products revenue in 2008.
On the network and management business side, the company’s Access and Compliance Management revenue was $112 million, down 10 percent from the prior fiscal year. Product revenue from Systems and Resource Management was $161 million in 2009, down 6 percent, and workgroup product revenue of $319 million showed a drop of 13 percent against 2008.
Novell reported sitting on cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $983 million at the end of its fiscal year, up from $921 million last quarter. However, the company’s total deferred revenue — which includes accounts receivable for orders already placed — was $689 million at the end of fiscal 2009, down from $730 million at the end of 2008.
