North of Boston business plan contest kicks off
By Mass High Tech staff
The Enterprise Center at Salem State College said today that it is taking applications from early-stage, start-up and growth businesses for the sixth annual North of Boston Business Plan Competition.
The competition focuses on companies throughout the North Shore and Merrimack Valley and offers $10,000 in prizes, including a $5,000 first place award. Eligible companies are less than three years old and plan to have at least five full-time employees by the end of two years. Applications are due on January 28.
“Entrepreneurs are the greatest economic engine of our local economy and workforce,” said Christine Sullivan, executive director of the Enterprise Center. “In these challenging economic times, it is even more crucial to find and support growth companies.”
Judges include early stage investors, venture capitalists, bankers and other experts who will examine each plan and select a winner.
Competition co-sponsors include two dozen organizations around the North Shore and Merrimack Valley.
The prize pool is smaller than that for the 2009 competition. In that program, Glymetrix of Salem won the grand prize of $10,000. Ashton Industries of Boxford came in second winning $6,000 and Halcyon Diagnostics, Inc. of Beverly took home the third prize of $4,000.
