AS&E wins X-ray van order for counterterrorism
By Mass High Tech staff
American Science and Engineering Inc. has landed a multimillion dollar order from an unnamed Middle East customer for two of its van-based X-ray threat detection systems, which will be in counterterrorism applications such as securing government facilities and mobile checkpoints.
According to officials at Billerica-based AS&E, the Z Backscatter Van systems will be configured for use in harsh environments. The X-ray technology is enclosed in what looks like a standard delivery van, allowing it to be quickly located where it is needed, and even used for “drive-by” screenings for explosives and contraband material.
Earlier this month, AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI) won $2.2 million from an unnamed government agency for its Z Portal X-ray screening system and multiple Gemini parcel inspection systems. The Z Portal system comprises three of the company’s Z Backscatter modules, allowing it to image a vehicle passing through it from the left, right and top-down views.
In October, AS&E received a $9.1 million order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to supply its cargo and vehicle inspection systems. The contract was funded by the Department of Homeland Security, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
For its fiscal 2009, which ended March 31, AS&E reported a profit of $28.35 million on revenue $218 million.
