Verizon Communications Inc. puts its charitable efforts into three main silos in New England: education, domestic violence and assistive technologies for the disabled.

In one of its notable education efforts, the Massachusetts Department of Education and Lesley University received a second year of funding to train more teachers to use Thinkfinity.org, a curriculum resource tool from Verizon Foundations online. Verizon also supported English For New Bostonians through its English as a Second Language technology awards.

“As one of the region’s largest private-sector employers, we believe it’s important to use our resources to transform lives and improve the communities where we live and work,” said Donna Cupelo, Verizon’s New England regional president.

Helping transform those lives, Verizon awarded assistive-technology grants to better serve people with disabilities. Among the recipients of the awards were the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton; Children’s Hospital/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program in Waltham; and The Learning Center for Deaf Children in Framingham.
