Flybridge adds $3M to online pilates equipment business

By Galen Moore

Flybridge Capital Partners has invested $3 million in a Cambridge Pilates instructor who runs a business selling exercise equipment on the home shopping network.

Lighter Living Inc., an East Cambridge business run by Marjolein Brugman, will use the funds to expand its web presence and line of products, a Flybridge spokeswoman said.

Flybridge spokeswoman Kate Castle says the firm’s investment in Lighter Living does not include Brugman’s current pilates business. She said the new lines of business Flybridge invested in “will launch in 2010.”

Flybridge general partner Michael Greeley first disclosed last month that the Boston-based venture firm was close to an investment in the company but has so far remained silent about the strategy for a venture return from the branded consumer products business.

Flybridge spokeswoman Kate Castle noted Brugman has, over 12 years, sold $500 million in products on the QVC cable channel. She said next year Lighter Living will expand its website with information on women’s fitness and an expanded line of products, but she declined to say what that new line of products will include or what Flybridge’s strategy will entail.

However, Brugman said the company plans to go into retail with an offering of products far beyond what it currently offers on its website. The company’s products currently encompass fitness and pilates equipment and media, aromatherapeutic candles and oils, beauty products and home accessories like air purifiers.

That offering “really doesn’t come close” to what Lighter Living plans, Brugman said, but she declined to offer specifics. “Really it’s just all about simple solutions for an easier life — that’s why ‘Lighter Living’,” she said.

Greeley, who according to a regulatory filing, took a board seat at Lighter Living along with the investment, was unavailable for comment today, Castle said.
