Navy directs $5.6M to WHOI engineering

By Brendan Lynch

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has landed $5.6 million from the U.S. Navy for engineering services, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Under the contract, Woods Hole will perform engineering for the Navy’s platform and payload integration department of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I. Work on the contract will be performed in Woods Hole and is expected to be completed by November 2014.

WHOI made news in April when it formed the Woods Hole Consortium with the Marine Biological Laboratory to address social issues. The consortium will focus on climate change, ecosystem health and human well-being, while seeking to create jobs on the south coast of Massachusetts by spinning out companies.

The WHOI is an independent research organization that focuses on the areas of engineering, marine research and higher education.
