24 Tech Citizens honored today for generosity

By Rodney H. Brown

Technology companies large and small gathered at the Seaport Hotel in South Boston this morning to be recognized as Tech Citizens in Mass High Tech’s 10th Annual Tech Citizenship awards.

Global giants like Microsoft Corp. and small startups like engineering software maker SoftInWay Inc. of New Hampshire were among the 24 companies honored this year, a record number. Among those recognized was the one company that has made the cut of those companies nominated every year since the program was launched — Genzyme Corp. of Cambridge.

The attendees heard from a panel of tech CEOs and top officers from honored companies about what they personally saw as a driving force behind their commitment to giving back to their communities. Roger Greene, founder and CEO of Ipswitch Inc of Lexington, told of how he wanted to make giving back a part of his business life, after being inspired by his grandparents and his father.

“I wanted to figure out a way to combine entrepreneurship and philanthropy to create a complete, meaningful life,” Greene said.

After the panel’s personal tales, they went out into the audience to help lead discussion at each table about what companies could do in the future to encourage giving back. After five minutes of active discussion around the room, each table brought its answers together, and the panelists told the audience about what they came up with at their respective tables.

Howard Kogan of Molecular Inc. said his table was talking about the need to make it easier for nonprofits to get their voices out in the ever-expanding global community.

“Why isn’t there a single tool that every nonprofit organization can use to have a voice?” Kogan asked.

Mass High Tech’s 2009 Tech Citizenship Awards were sponsored by law firm WilmerHale, Microsoft and the Seaport Hotel.
