Maine energy efficiency projects net $9.6M DOE grants

By Jackie Noblett

The state of Maine will receive $9.6 million in U.S. Department of Energy grant funding to make public buildings and vehicles more energy efficient, the DOE disclosed late Tuesday.

About 60 percent of the funding from the Energy Efficiency and Community Block Grant Program will be doled out among cities and towns for specific efficency projects such as building retrofits, transportation programs, and installing wind, solar or other renewable energy systems on public property. The rest of the funding will be combined with other stimulus money to provide grants to commercial projects related to building energy efficiency.

The DOE estimates the funding will create or save 100 green jobs.

“It will promote some of the cheapest, cleanest and most reliable energy technologies we have — energy efficiency and conservation — which can be deployed immediately,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Stephen Chu in a statement.
