AS&E X-ray inspection systems net $2.2M order

By Brendan Lynch

American Science and Engineering Inc. reports it has landed $2.2 million from an unnamed government agency for its X-ray inspection system.

Under the deal, Billerica-based AS&E (Nasdaq: ASEI) will provide its Z Portal X-ray screening system and multiple Gemini parcel inspection systems. The Z Portal system comprises three of the company’s Z Backscatter modules, allowing it to image a vehicle passing through it from the left, right, and top-down views. The Gemini parcel inspection system combines AS&E’s Z Backscatter technology and dual-energy transmission technology to detect organic materials and metallic threats.

Last month, AS&E received a $9.1 million order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to supply its cargo and vehicle inspection systems. The contract was funded by the Department of Homeland Security, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The company will provide MobileSearch High-Energy inspection systems complete with the company’s Z Backscatter X-ray imaging and high-energy transmission.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2009, AS&E reported a $7.3 million net income on $54.7 million in revenue.
