Advanced BioHealing begins skin substitute trial

By Mass High Tech staff

Advanced BioHealing Inc., a developer of living cell technology, has begun an international trial of its bio-engineered skin substitute Dermagraft in patients with venous leg ulcers. The trial is expected to determine safety and efficacy of the product.

Dermagraft is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat diabetic foot ulcers and for use inn wound care and outpatient clinics in the U.S.

The trial is expected to test more than 400 patients with venous leg ulcers in a randomized study. As part of the study, one group of patients will receive weekly Dermagraft applications, along with compression dressings, while the other group will receive only the weekly compression dressings.

Advanced BioHealing is located in Westport, Conn., and maintains a 70,000 square-foot manufacturing plant in La Jolla, Calif.
