Alkermes moves alcohol dependency drug candidate to Phase 2 study

By Mass High Tech staff

Alkermes Inc. has begun a Phase 2 clinical study of ALKS 33, the Cambridge biotech’s drug candidate for treating alcohol dependence and other central nervous system disorders. The study is expected to determine safety and efficacy of multiple doses of the oral opioid modulator.

Alkermes (Nasdaq: ALKS) will test up to 440 patients for 12 weeks through random distribution of the drug candidate and a placebo. The company will determine the efficacy by evaluating patients that have refrained from heavy alcohol use during the eight-week evaluation phase.

The company announced Monday that it plans to seek approval next year to market its Vivitrol drug to treat opioid dependence, based on the results of a clinical trial.
