Techstars Boston plans spring startup program

By Galen Moore

After holding its first session here over the summer, Techstars Boston will shift its 2010 Boston session to the springtime in order to provide better access to mentors.

In 2010, the Boulder, Colo.-based technology startup incubator will kick off its Boston program in March and wrap up in June. This year, the Boston program started in June and wrapped up in August — a timeline that didn’t match up with New England vacation schedules, said investor and mentor Bill Warner.

“Given that the programs are so heavily focused on mentor involvement, and with August being the home stretch, Boston in August was problematic,” Warner said, adding that the Boston program put off its presentation to investors until September, to get better attendance.

With the new schedule, startups in the Boston program are likely to get more time with Foundry Group managing director Brad Feld and entrepreneur David Cohen, who started the program with two other entrepreneurs in 2006. Both are based in Boulder. Warner said having the two programs run concurrently resulted in competition for their availability.

Boulder, a vacation destination itself, does not suffer from the same seasonal malaise, Warner said.

The application deadline for the spring 2010 session in Boston will be Jan. 15, according to the Techstars website. Serial entrepreneur Shawn Broderick, who ran the 2009 program, is set to return in 2010.
