AMSC nets $10M for wind turbine parts in China

By Jackie Noblett

American Superconductor Inc. said Tuesday it has received a new $10 million order for wind turbine components from a Chinese wind turbine maker.

The order from CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co. Ltd. calls for AMSC (Nasdaq: AMSC), based in Devens, to provide core electrical components that can be used in the construction of 1.65 megawatt turbines designed by AMSC’s Windtec subsidiary.

CSR-ZELRI entered into a wind turbine licensing contract with AMSC in January 2007, and to date the wind turbine manufacturer has ordered more than $20 million in electrical components from AMSC.

In September, AMSC won a contract worth more than $100 million with Beijing-based Sinovel Wind Corp. Ltd. The superconductor and renewable energy component maker will provide electrical components for use in the Chinese wind turbine producer’s 3 megawatt wind turbine, known as SL3000.
