Stimulus funds aid UNH floating wind turbine

By Brendan Lynch

The University of New Hampshire reports its Center for Ocean Renewable Energy (CORE) has landed $700,000 in federal stimulus funds to test a prototype floating wind turbine.

CORE received the two-year, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the U.S. Department of Energy for its role in a consortium led by the University of Maine. The consortium, called the DeepCwind Deepwater Offshore Wind Consortium, received $8 million in stimulus funding last month. The floating turbine would be the first of its kind in the U.S., according to UNH, and the second in the world. The other is in Norway.

Within a year, CORE said it plans to install a 25-foot diameter wind turbine on a floating, 60-foot tower south of the Isles of Shoals. CORE plans to equip the 10-kilowatt turbine with instruments to measure wind, wave, and temperature effects on the turbine, its platform and its mooring.
