Cequent files first IND application
By Mass High Tech staff
Cambridge-based biotechnology company Cequent Pharmaceuticals Inc. has filed its first investigational new drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its drug candidate to treat colorectal cancer.
The drug candidate, CEQ508, is an orally administered RNA interference drug that targets beta-catenin, associated with polyps formation linked to colorectal cancer. It will enter Phase 1 clinical trials early next year in Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Cequent officials said. The trial will test the drug candidate’s safety and tolerability levels.
Founded in 2006, the company closed its first round of funding in June of 2007, which included investments from Wellesley-based Ampersand Ventures, Durham, N.C.-based A.M. Pappas Life Science Ventures and Cambridge-based Novartis Option Fund. Earlier this month, the biotech has raised $3.4 million of a planned $15 million financing round.
Cequent’s product pipeline, which has candidates in preclinical development, includes drug targets aimed at colon-cancer prevention and inflammatory bowel disease.
