Defense helicopter maker Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. have partnered on a joint venture to manufacture aerospace components in India, according to Sikorsky officials.
The deal expands an agreement signed in June under which Tata manufactured Sikorsky S-92 helicopter cabins. That deal stemmed from a memorandum of understanding the two companies signed in 2007 to explore the establishment of aerospace operations in India.
Construction on a joint manufacturing facility is planned to be completed in 2011, with production beginning in 2012. Tata plans to make the helicopter cabins and other components in Hyderabad, India.
Sikorsky is a subsidiary of Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX). United Technologies reported a net income of $1.1 billion on revenue of $13.4 billion for the quarter ended September 30.
Tata Advanced Systems is a subsidiary of Mumbai-based giant conglomerate Tata Group, which is a $72 billion company and has 350,000 employees worldwide.
