PureTech Ventures has appointed former Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) R&D president John LaMattina as a senior partner, the Boston-based firm announced in a press release this morning. The life sciences venture capital firm also promoted associates Eric Elenko and Steve Muniz to partner. Elenko and Muniz join David Steinberg on PureTech’s operational leadership team.
LaMattina, a 30-year Pfizer veteran, brings knowledge of a potential acquirer for PureTech portfolio companies.
“It’s good to have the perspective of those big pharma companies that might potentially acquire,” said founder and managing partner Daphne Zohar.
The firm already enjoys such a window into Merck & Co. Inc. In 2003, shortly after its founding, the firm added Bennett Shapiro, a former executive vice president of worldwide licensing and external research at the New Jersey-based drug company.
LaMattina will also connect PureTech to a network of Pfizer executives the VC firm could tap for its portfolio companies, Zohar said. In January, PureTech lured away a Pfizer senior vice president, Jeffrey Ives, to head Satori Pharmaceuticals Inc., a Cambridge-based developer of drugs for neurodegenerative disorders the venture firm helped found in 2005.
